Emilio Sosa, Project Runway season 7 finalist, showed his highly anticipated fall 2012 collection at NYC’s Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater during NYFW. After taking in beautiful wall art of the Ailey dancers, I entered Emilio’s cocktail reception to a dj spinning the latest. More than a style presentation, this was a party for the senses…an explosion of vibrant colors!
Emilio Sosa & the Urban Geisha
Emilio began designing while researching for his current Broadway show, Porgy and Bess. While reading “Memoir of a Geisha,” he decided to mash up the book and musical for his Urban Geisha line. Both stories were set in the 30’s, but were a world apart. However, each explores a woman’s role in society using clothing and color to shape the character’s personalities. Mix in a dab of music and graffiti art and you got the “Urban” part!
Truly an eyeful, I enjoyed all of the sportswear silhouettes mixed with Japanese references. All I could think was, “Wow! It’s time to break out the bright red lipstick!” The makeup was of course, by MAC – connoisseurs of the vivid. Abigail de Casanova, assistant to the hair director, said Emilio wanted the models’ hair to be slick and as straight as possible without losing movement. That was a look I would see at many shows during NYFW and something you fashionistas should look out for.
