Happy Friday Fashion Femme Fatales and Gents! Today we celebrate a movie that the late Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Roger Ebert called one of the best films ever made, “Do The Right Thing.” Spike Lee’s powerful tale about the hottest day ever in a Bed-Stuy neighborhood enveloped in racial tensions was released 25 years ago on June 30, 1989. “Do The Right Thing” was packed full of stars including the late super couple Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee, Danny Aiello, Giancarlo Esposito, Richard Edson, Robin Harris, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Nunn, Rosie Perez, and John Turturro. Lee’s explosive film had fashions to equal its vividness. A bright movie with colors as hot as the climate of the storyline – there were splashes of yellows, oranges and limes. Imagine- it was the end of the 80’s and the beginning of the 90’s – and now these looks are back in vogue. In fact, when I look around, it seems inspiration has come directly from the film. Everywhere I go, guys are rockin’ fatigue shorts with bright shirts, tanks, round frames, floral button ups, five-finger rings, high top fades, side parts and so are crop tops in primary colors (shout out to the great Rosie Perez). Top designers have been playing with sporty styles from biking gear to baseball jerseys. We can’t forget the Jordans, which have always been the trend, but this movie was an huge part of what started that long-long style. Nike owes Spike for this! Ha! A little known fact, is Will Smith’s tv wardrobe for the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” was even influenced by this film thanks to “Do The Right Thing’s” costume designer Ruth E. Carter. Man, the more I think about it, this film was incredibly influential from Lee’s filmmaking style to styles on the actors! The lesson was the most important. As a young teen, having never seen anything quite like it, I found the film to be profound and impactful. It gave me an enhanced understanding of the irrationality behind racial violence and the importance of acceptance. If you haven’t seen “Do The Right Thing,” why not check it out this weekend and be sure to update your wardrobe with some looks from the past!
