“African Icons Kicks Off NY Fashion Week”
One of the more stunning shows during Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week is by Arise Magazine, an internationally distributed publication on African fashion/culture/lifestyle. This year’s 1,000 plus crowd gave a standing ovation to the designers selected to present their collections as part of Arise’s “African Icons” event at the Lincoln Center on Thursday. I will write about each designer to give you a taste of the luxe and inspirational fashion I witnessed. In my first installment I begin with South African designer extraordinaire Gavin Rajah.
Gavin has designed jewelry collections has dressed the likes of Beyonce, Tom Cruise, Celine Dion, Cameron Diaz, Tina Turner, Jodie Kidd and even Nelson Mandela. With a clientele resume such as that, you can only expect a grand collection! The runway was filled with exuberant colors, sequins, metallic trims, rich fabrics and the most beautiful accessory – crowns. Also cool – this collection showed live in the Lincoln Center’s lobby on a widescreen for all to see. Gavin isn’t just a “pretty face” – he’s a do gooder, too. Mr. Rajah is an ambassador for UNICEF working with projects that uplift South African children in need.
I'm a media strategist, fashion fan and whimsical event planner. For years, I've been "reporting" from fashion shows and fabulous events to my loved one out of pure joy. Unbeknowest to me in February 2012 my sister started kristysamone.com with photos and letters I'd sent her from New York Fashion Week. She said, "I think you need a blog!" LOL! I've been trying keep us with this and life ever since:) Thanks so much for reading!View all KristySamone posts.
